JoJo Siwa Pushes Back on Candace Cameron Bure's 'No Gays' Cable Channel

Fans buzzed last summer when JoJo Siwa called Candace Cameron Bure the "rudest celebrity" she'd ever met. The two reconciled, but is Siwa now thinking she was right all along?

The openly gay 19-year-old entertainer called out plans by the actor and cable exec to make cable channel Great American Family a gay-free zone where it's assumed that "traditional marriage" is the only sort that matters, Entertainment Weekly reported.

"[H]onestly, I can't believe after everything that went down just a few months ago, that she would not only create a movie with [the] intention of excluding LGBTQIA+ [people], but then also talk about it in the press," Siwa said in an Instagram post.

"This is rude and hurtful to a whole community of people," Siwa declared.

As previously reported, Bure had told the Wall Street Journal that in her capacity as chief creative officer at the cable channel she was going to avoid inclusive holiday movies of the sort that her former employer, the Hallmark Channel, has begun producing.

"I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core," Bure told the newspaper.

Bure also said that the reason for leaving Hallmark was that the channel had undergone "a change of leadership," whereas "I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment," Bure said.

Moreover, "My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them," Bure offered the WSJ, though without explaining why same-sex relationships would lack those qualities.

Indeed, actor Hilarie Burton, a veteran of Hallmark Channel movies, honed in on just that, EW noted.

"Now they're just openly admitting their bigotry," Burton said in a tweet, before going on to add: "There is nothing untraditional about same-sex couples."

Siwa's comments drew plaudits – even from one of Bure's closest working associates. "The message received support from Bure's 'Fuller House' co-star Jodie Sweetin who replied to the post adding, 'You know I love you ❤️❤️,'" Deadline reported.

By mentioning "what went down a few months ago," Siwa was seemingly referring to the sensation she stirred up last July when, in a viral video, she flashed celebrity photos and put them in the categories of "rudest," "nicest," and her "crush," among others.

When it came to the category of "rudest celebrity," Siwa held up Bure's photo, prompting intense speculation as to why – not least from Bure herself, who reached out through her agent to ask Siwa what she had done to offend her.

The story came out that when Siwa was 11, Bure ignored her during a red carpet event for the premiere of Bure's series "Fuller House."

"Please know, especially, as a mom, it breaks my heart that I made you feel that way," Bure described apologizing to Siwa. "I know if anyone crosses my kids, mama bear comes out."

But not, perhaps, when it comes to LGBTQ+ youth looking for a way to break the news to parents who might not automatically be supportive – or who are looking to see themselves represented in the culture at large. Those kids will just have to tune in to movies on The Hallmark Channel.
