Daniel Craig on 'Knives Out' Character Being Gay: It's 'Normal,' 'Reflects My Life'

"Glass Onion" star Daniel Craig is staying the course with his casual acceptance of his character, super sleuth Benoit Blanc, being gay and partnered with a man. Craig told UK newspaper the Sunday Times over the weekend that the gay relationship "reflects my life" and "feels right."
In "Glass Onion," the new sequel to Rian Johnson's witty 2019 whodunit "Knives Out," Benoit Blanc is shown to be living with a man. Johnson has confirmed that Blanc and the man are same-sex partners, and that Blanc is gay. For his part, Craig has been nonchalant about Blanc's sexuality, and continued to be so in his comments to the Sunday Times.
"It's normal," the former James Bond actor said of his character's sexuality. "But we don't want to make a song and dance out of it. It just feels right."
Noting that movies are "are supposed to reflect life," Craig added that "that relationship" – the one depicted in the new film – "reflects my life," UK newspaper the Independent reported.
"It is unclear whether Craig was referring to his personal relationships or the wider need for representation of different sexualities on screen," the Independent cautioned.
Either way, Benoit Blanc's depiction as a gay man – and the manner in which his relationship is portrayed – is a step forward for representation. "Glass Onion" also benefits from the inclusion of non-binary recording artist and actor Janelle Monáe, as noted in a previous EDGE article.
Craig's comments echoed other recent remarks; he told Deadline recently that "The less of a song and dance we make about [Benoit's sexuality], the better, really, for me, because it just made sense.
"And also, as I said at the [London Film Festival, where 'Glass Onion' premiered], who wouldn't want to live with the human being that he happens to live with?" Craig added.
"It's nice, it's fun," Craig went on to say. "And why shouldn't it be? I don't want people to get politically hung up on anything."
Comments Craig has made in the past would seem to reconfirm his own heterosexuality while indicating that he's secure enough that he doesn't mind sharing the occasional peck with a male friend.
The Independent recalled Craig revisiting an anecdote from 2010 with restaurant owner Bruce Bozzi during a 2021 appearance on Bozzi's podcast. "Craig addressed reports that he and Bozzi had been seen kissing at a gay bar called Roosterfish in Venice Beach, California," the newspaper detailed.
"What happened is we were having a nice night and I kind of was talking to you about my life when my life was changing," Craig told Bozzi on the show, "and we got drunk and I was like, 'Oh, let's just go to a bar, come on, let's fucking go out.' And I just was like, I don't give a fuck..."
Craig also owned up to liking to go to gay bars – though the reason he gave was entirely straight. "I don't get into fights in gay bars that often," Craig said. He was also "very sick" of "the aggressive dick swinging in hetero bars," he said. Besides, Craig disclosed, "I could meet girls there, because there are a lot of girls there for exactly the same reason I was there. It was kind of an ulterior motive."
Netflix released "Glass Onion" in theaters last month; it is due to hit the streamer later in December.
