Sam Smith showed up to perform at Hot 99.5's iHeartRadio Jingle Ball 2022 wearing a glittery silver bodysuit that showed off their tattoos, but prompted a wave of body shaming on Twitter. Others rose to Smith's defense.
"The 'Unholy' singer, 30, wore a very low-cut chest-baring sparkling silver jumpsuit – which [they] previously sported [at] the Jingle Bell Ball in London on Saturday – underneath a glimmering black jacket, and accessorized the look with a pink purse and a diamond necklace," detailed UK newspaper the Daily Mail.
"Sam is a Grammy-, Oscar-, and Golden Globe-winning star who's shattered records with their amazing voice and catchy bops," Buzzfeed raved, adding that the hitmaker's "latest song, 'Unholy' featuring Kim Petras, topped Billboard recently."
Petras joined Smith onstage to perform the single, Buzzfeed noted.
But some on Twitter weren't focused on the quality of the performances or even the fashion-forward looks. Instead, there was a barrage of body-shaming commentary aimed at Smith, who is gay and non-binary, after their appearance at the event.
One troll called Smith "a fat mess," and declared them to be "A repulsive human being," while another dissed the "Lay Me Down" singer as "fat and lame."
Other trolls "compar[ed] their physique to Harry Styles, who also delighted fans in a sequined jumpsuit a few months back," Sportskeeda recounted.
"Some, however, have defended Smith's honor and called out the trolls and their 'fatphobia,'" the site added.
