There was no better moment to hear Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" than when President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law on the South Lawn of the White House on Tuesday, protecting same-sex and interracial marriages across the country.
As reported by Billboard, the ink was barely dry on Biden's signature when the LGBTQ+ anthem began blasting through the surrounding speakers. The crowd erupted in applause and Biden hugged First Lady Dr. Jill Biden as the rest of his team celebrated.
Gaga's "Born This Way," from her 2011 album of the same name, was actually inspired by Carl Bean, a gay black religious activist who preached and sung about, what else, being "born this way."
Gaga acknowledged her inspiration for the song in a 2021 Instagram post, writing: "Notably his early work was in 1975, 11 years before I was born. Thank you for decades of relentless love, bravery, and a reason to sing. So we can all feel joy, because we deserve joy. Because we deserve the right to inspire tolerance, acceptance, and freedom for all."
The Respect for Marriage Act passed in the House of Representatives with a vote of 258-169, and 61-36 in the Senate.
Additional, anthems heard at the signing of the new law included Cyndi Lauper singing her iconic hit "True Colors" live, and then Sam Smith took to the stage to perform their hit ballad, "Stay With Me."
