Watch: Aubrey Plaza Weighs in on Theo James' 'White Lotus' Prosthetic
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 3 MIN.
"The White Lotus" star Aubrey Plaza chatted with Drew Barrymore about the "donkey"-sized prosthetic worn by Theo James in a memorable scene the two shared, in which James' character stripped down in view of his best friend's wife while changing into swim trunks.
The scene constituted another notch for HBO and HBO Max, which have been breaking ground in presentations of full-frontal male nudity in recent seasons. (Even so, the aired version of the scene was reportedly tamer than a "more aggressive" take that was left unused.)
The scene served up a bountiful eyeful to viewers, who were understandably curious as to the, shall we say, bona fides of what they were seeing.
"After the scene aired, everyone was wondering if Theo really bared it all or if he wore a prosthetic," Just Jared recalled. "He later confirmed that it was indeed a prosthetic."
But why opt for a silicone replica when the real thing is presumably available?
Plaza addressed that topic, telling Barrymore that James "wanted to have the biggest one or whatever. He wanted to have the big one and he got it."
"Guys are so weird with that stuff," Plaza added. "It's interesting to me how male actors are always like, there's more fuss and more stuff about them, in my experience. I'm like, 'Women get naked all the time, what's the big deal?'"
That wasn't quite the way James told the tale, though. As previously reported at EDGE, James suggested to Jimmy Fallon that he was concerned about the scene's centerpiece not being too "distracting..."
"It needs to be 'Regular Joe,'" James recounted telling the show's makeup boss, Rebecca Hickey. "Because the scene, you know, it's not about the pee-pee, it's about power play and sex. It's about whether he did it deliberately or whether it was an accident and what that means. She says, 'I got you. Yeah, I got you. Regular Joe.'"
James' comments might be interpreted as implying that his natural endowment would be too much for the scene to handle... except then James admitted to being taken aback at the proportions of the prosthetic he ended up using in the episode, which, Buzzfeed News recalled, the actor described as "nine inches flaccid and about four inches wide."
"It's like she stole it off a donkey in the field!" James said, not inaptly. "The thing is ginormous."
The Hollywood Reporter noted that during an appearance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," Plaza offered her own thoughts regarding one of the mysteries from the show's recently-concluded second season that writer/director Mike White left up to our imaginations: Namely, whether James' character, Cameron, and Harper – the wife of Ethan (Will Sharpe), Cameron's best friend from college, whom Plaza portrayed – actually did get up to all the sexy stuff Ethan's wild imagination conjured as he writhed in jealous torment after spotting the two chatting at the resort's surf-side bar.
"I know what happened, okay?" Plaza declared to Meyers. "And what happened is, we did some stuff. And I hated every minute of it. It was disgusting." Though, she added as an afterthought, "there was no penetration."
Of course, Harper had her reasons: She suspected that Ethan had been up to tomfoolery of his own in her absence. "But, what does my husband do? That's the real question," Plaza pointed out.
