Daniel Craig's 'Knives Out' Hero Not Just Gay, but Married

Warning: This article contains spoilers for "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," streaming now on Netflix.

Those who know say it's so: Benoit Blanc, the brilliant detective played by Daniel Craig in the "Knives Out" movies, is not only gay and partnered, but married to his man.

That bit of intel comes straight from Craig's onscreen husband – none other than rom-com legend Hugh Grant, who told Collider in an interview, "It is true, I'm married to James Bond."

Grant appears in a swift, but significant, moment in the "Knives Out" sequel, the second in what will be at least three movies overall thanks to Netflix having greenlit two sequels to the 2019 hit whodunit.

Digital Spy, reporting on the story, noted that Grant has the "role of Phillip, Blanc's husband. When Janelle Monáe's character shows up at the detective's house, it's Phillip who opens the door instead, rocking an apron and holding a jar of sourdough starter."

Blanc, meanwhile, is in the bathtub, Collider recounted, "playing 'Among Us' with Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Natasha Lyonne and Kareem Abdul Jabbar." It's during the pandemic, and like everyone else the married couple are coping as best they can.

Of his quick appearance in the film, which Grant said only took "a few hours" to film, the actor told Collider: "It's the tiniest little moment."

"I don't really know why they wanted to do it," Grant added, "but anyway, I thought 'Knives Out 1' was brilliant, and so yeah, I thought why not?"

As previously reported, Rian Johnson, the writer and director of both films, confirmed what fans of the funny mystery movies had suspected in a press conference at the London Film Festival this past October. Asked directly whether Benoit Blanc is gay, Johnson replied, "Yes, he obviously is," Entertainment Weekly detailed.

"To queer-eyed viewers, this might not come as too much of a shock," EW noted. "In the first 'Knives Out,' Blanc sounds like a mix between Truman Capote and Foghorn Leghorn – gay icons both – but that was pure subtext."

For his part, Craig has been nonchalant about Blanc's sexuality, and continued to be so in comments he made recently to the Sunday Times.

"It's normal," the former James Bond actor said of his character's sexuality. "But we don't want to make a song and dance out of it. It just feels right."

Noting that movies "are supposed to reflect life," Craig added that the relationship depicted in the new film between Blanc and his husband "reflects my life," UK newspaper the Independent reported.

"It is unclear whether Craig was referring to his personal relationships or the wider need for representation of different sexualities on screen," the Independent cautioned.
