READ TIME: 2 MIN.
At this year's Oscar luncheon, nominees Angela Bassett and Hong Chau talked about ways to improve the diversity of the voices and stories that are recognized by the academy.
Bassett is nominated for her role in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," and talked on Monday (13 February) about the need for a wide frame of experience in filmmaking.
"I would say first and foremost, you know, see an array of movies, whether you think you can relate to it or not," Bassett told the AP. "Well, it's easy and it's possible to to miss very, very fine performances. But frame of reference is everything. So have a wide and open frame of reference."
Hong Chau, nominated for "The Whale," said the focus on diversity needs to start on those just starting their film careers.
"I think if we're all as an industry working together to make sure that people have a lot of opportunities to practice their craft and to gain experience and to really get comfortable in front of the camera," Chau said. "That's where we should be focusing a lot of our energy."
Daniel Kwan, who together with Daniel Scheinert, directed the Oscar nominated "Everything Everywhere All At Once," and said he's seen in the last few years a change for Asian voices in cinema.
"But I do think it's a testament to how far the industry has come, as far as as far as Asian representation over the past six or seven years," said Kwan. "It's it's kind of incredible. I mean, this year, I think, is the most Asian nominees ever in one year. Like to be a part of that is incredible."
The Oscars will air on ABC on March 12.
