Non-binary 'The Last of Us' Star Bella Ramsey Stands Up to Anti-Gay Trolls

Non-binary actor Bella Ramsey pushed back on homophobic trolls who bombarded the epic third episode of "The Last of Us" with hate: "they're gonna have to get used to it."

Ramsey also expressed hope that the show will allow her character a lesbian storyline, according to Variety.

Ramsey, who embraces a range of pronouns that includes "she/her" and "they," aired her sentiments in an interview with British GQ, following the airing of the show's fourth episode.

But the instant-classic Episode 3 remained part of the conversation, having spent most of its extra-long run time focused not on Ramsey's character Ellie or the other lead Joel (Pedro Pascal), but rather on the decades-long same-sex romance of a pair of guest characters played by Nick Offerman and openly gay Australian actor Murray Bartlett.

"Toxic fans review bombed the episode on websites such as IMDb, but Bill and Frank's romance is just the beginning of gay representation on 'The Last of Us,'" Variety reported. The show is, after all, adapted from its hit video game source material in which Ellie has a romance with another woman. Comments from Ramsey indicated she would be up for a same-sex romance during Season 2.

"The sequel also introduces a transgender teenager named Lev," the entertainment news outlet noted.

Ramsey didn't let the homophobic noise rattle her. "I know people will think what they want to think," she told GQ. "But they're gonna have to get used to it. If you don't want to watch the show because it has gay storylines, because it has a trans character, that's on you, and you're missing out. It isn't gonna make me afraid. I think that comes from a place of defiance."

Ramsey also opened up about her own status as a non-binary person, and "revealed that she wore a chest binder for '90%' of filming during the show's first season so that she could focus better on set," Variety detailed.

"Ramsey said her co-star, Pedro Pascal, was 'super supportive' of her decision," Variety added. "Pascal's sister is transgender. Ramsey said the two actors often discussed sexual identity in between takes."

"They could be funny and humorous, the whole spectrum," Ramsey described those conversations. "We were just very honest and open with each other."
