Out rapper Da Brat, 48, has announced that with her pregnancy, she and wife Jesseca "Judy" Harris-Dupart, have begun a journey toward parenthood.

People Magazine, in an exclusive, recounted that "The couple's road to motherhood started around the time they said 'I do' back on Feb. 2 of last year."

Harris-Dupart, 41, who established and runs her own line of beauty products, told People, "It started as a joke, we were like, 'We're extending our family!'"

"But then we got a huge response," she added. "It was like, 'Oh my God do we want to actually have kids, and if we do, girl, we better hurry up!'"

Though Harris-Dupart already has three children from a previous relationship, the article noted, Da Brat figured that becoming pregnant "wasn't in the cards for me. I've had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn't get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn't going to happen for me."

But as the couple talked about adding a new child to their family, Harris-Dupart prevailed over her wife, convincing her to bear a child. "We had a little tug-o-war in the beginning," Harris-Dupart told People, "but I felt like she should have the experience.... She is so nurturing."

Health concerns complicated things. People noted that "Harris-Dupart suffered major health complications following her egg retrieval procedure," while Da Brat "faced difficult health issues of her own, including having to undergo surgery to remove fibroids and polyps prior to her embryo transfer procedure."

Their first attempt ended in a miscarriage. "I had never been so excited about something that I didn't even know I wanted," Da Brat recalled. "I fell in love with the idea and then it was all snatched away from me." But the couple were determined to try once again.

"Firmly into her second trimester" at this point, the rapper now says she's "excited," though also feeling the fatigue that sometimes comes with pregnancy. "I don't have any cravings or nausea," she added, however.

Da Brat's debut album, "Funkdafied," was released in 1994, but it wasn't until 2020 that she came out, People Mag said. Commenting on her long years in the closet, the recording artist told the magazine, "It's way different now than it was before."

"When I came out I was like 'Damn, if I knew it was going to be this nice and loving I'd have probably come out a long time ago!'"
