Singer and fashion model Andreas Wijk posted a video on Instagram in which his single "If I Was Gay" plays in a car while he listens together with his parents. The viral clip is moving viewers online, just as his mom and dad are clearly moved in the video.
"The scariest thing I've ever done," a caption declares as the video begins. The words are accompanied by a Pride flag, and the words "Mom" and "Dad" appear, with hearts, next to his parents.
"If I was gay would I be what they say," the lyrics flash over the video. "Just a stereotype..."
Wijk visibly tries to relax as the song continues.
"Play me all the classic love songs on repeat," the singer croons in the recording. "None of them talk about what I feel."
Wijk's father is a Pentecostal minister, according to Wikipedia. But in the video, his father is nothing but supportive, listening attentively and gripping his son's hand as the two sit in the front seats of a car. Wijk's mother, meanwhile, sits in the back, beaming.
"I've never kissed a boy," the song's lyrics go. "Would I like the way it feels?"
"It really feels like you are reflecting your whole life story in this song," his father tells the smiling 30-year-old, before the two embrace. Wijk reaches back to grasp his mother's hand.
"Oh, Andreas," his father says, as Wijk answers, "I'm so relieved."
The clip was originally posted last October, and a portion of the video also went up on TikTok. "A week ago I wrote a new song," Wijk wrote. "I think it's called 'if I was gay' and this morning I played it to my parents when they picked me up for lunch."
"It's scary to be transparent," the singer added.
Fans flocked to offer their reassurances in turn.
"Your courage will inspire others," one person wrote. "True artistry."
"This is amazing lovely one," another commented, adding, "so happy you are sharing your truth sending so much love ❤️❤️"
"Listening to it again, again, I tear up 🥹," a third person remarked; "Daddy's proud 😉 Sooo cool!"
One person offered a lesson from his own life in the harm that familial rejection causes, writing, "We have identical stories with one major exception - I was totally rejected.
"As a result I never dated, never married. Im 60 and I have had a miserable life nd its all my fault. I AM THRILLED TO SEE ALL THE LEVELS OF ACCEPTANCE TODAY!"
Wikipedia noted that since the clip's initial posting, it has gone "viral and was also spread internationally with 25 million views."
