Tom Daley, Dustin Lance Black Welcome New Baby Son

British Olympic gold medalist and equality advocate Tom Daley has said that he and his American screenwriter husband, Dustin Lance Black, have had to "prove themselves" as parents in ways that aren't required of straight couples. But the power couple are set to prove themselves once again as committed, loving fathers with the arrival of their second son, Phoenix Rose.

"The Olympic diver, 28, and his husband, 48, shared their surprise baby news on April 5, having not previously [revealed] they were expecting another child," reported UK newspaper the Daily Mail.

"The news was revealed in The Times with an announcement that their second son, Phoenix Rose, was born on March 28 via surrogate," the Mail continued.

The news account recalled that "The couple welcomed their first child together, a son called Robert Ray, via surrogacy on June 27, 2018, after announcing in February the same year that they were expecting."

"They named their first child after Tom's late father Robert, who died of a brain tumor in May 2011 aged 40."

The new arrival was not completely unexpected; the Mail noted that Daley had told another UK newspaper, The Guardian, that he and Black hoped to have more children, though, he noted, for same-sex couples the proposition requires more intentionality and planning.

"It's not quite as easy as a bottle of wine and a good time," Daley told The Guardian. " A lot of thought has to go into it. But absolutely, I'd love more kids."

As previously reported, Daley recounted in his memoir, "Coming Up for Air," that being a gay father involves additional legal and financial burdens, and attracts heightened "judgment."

Daley also shared in the memoir that strangers sometimes seem to think he and Black are more in need of unsolicited advice than a heterosexual couple would be. In one of the book's anecdotes, Daley recalls a stranger offering to change their son's diaper.

Daley and Black have been together for a decade, and children seem always to have been part of their plans. Daley spoke to that in an interview with Radio Times last year, revealing how, "Back in 2013 we'd named our children, which seems to break every one of the dating rules!"
