Netflix Axes Spanish Gay Rom-Com 'Smiley'
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 1 MIN.
Fans of "Smiley" will be frowning with the news that Netflix has canceled the gay Spanish comedy, which ran for a single eight-episode season on the streamer.
The show is set in Barcelona and follows the romance between an uptight architect named Bruno (Miki Esparbé) and an expressive bartender named Álex (Carlos Cuevas). The two meet cute when Álex dials the wrong number and leaves an enraged voicemail for his ex on Bruno's cell phone. Intrigued, Bruno calls him back, and things quickly take shape from there.
Misunderstandings abound between the classic-movie-loving Bruno and the gym-obsessed Álex, putting the two at odds, but their mutual attraction is too strong to resist. Even after they break up and start dating other men (one of them being Ramon Pujol of "End of the Century" fame), the spark still burns hot. Meanwhile, the people around them have their own struggles with work, life, and love. Writer Guillem Clua wrote all eight episodes, basing the series on his play of the same title.
Spanish language site Diari di Girona reported that Clua stated that Netflix "will not shoot new episodes of the series, which premiered last December."
The news outlet added that "this decision would be justified by the low audience that the first season... achieved on the streaming content platform."
Clua, the article added, "is currently working on other projects."
