Out actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, looking back at his TV marriage to "Modern Family" co-star Eric Stonestreet, recalled how his straight castmate worried about nailing a gay role, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Kicking off his new podcast, "Dinner's on Me," Ferguson reminisced with another "Modern Family" alum – Julie Bowen, who played his character's sister on the show – about Stonestreet's "really hilarious, nuanced performance."
But, he added, Stonestreet's insecurity about doing a creditable job finally had him asking his co-star to be less uptight about it.
"He would always kind of check in with me to make sure he's on the right track," Ferguson told Bowen. "And finally I was like, 'You need to stop doing that 'cause you're doing a really great job."
EW recalled that "Ferguson and Stonestreet played the married couple throughout all 11 seasons of the Emmy-winning ABC sitcom, which aired between 2009 and 2020."
Evidently, Ferguson's coaching paid off:
"Both were nominated for Emmys multiple times, with Stonestreet winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series twice," EW added.
The issue of straight and cisgender actors playing LGBTQ+ roles has become a point of some contention since the show's run. Bowen acknowledged this by asking Ferguson if Stonestreet could still be cast in the role today, EW imparted.
"I think if you ask Eric, he would say no," Ferguson responded, before appending: "In fact, I know he would say no because we've had this conversation."
Ferguson went on to add, "But at the same time, it's tricky because he's a part of pop culture history. I don't think anyone could imagine Mitch and Cam without him as Cam."
