2023 Rewind: Tom Holland Gets Trolled for Gay Sex Scene in 'The Crowded Room'

Holland plays Danny Sullivan opposite Amanda Seyfried, who plays investigator Rya Goodwin, who is attempting to discover Sullivan's past that led to his involvement in a 1979 New York shooting.

In the eighth episode, one of Sullivan's alternate personalities is a woman who dons eye make-up and goes to a nightclub. Once there, they get picked up by a man. The scene culminates with Sullivan being the passive partner in anal sex in a bathroom.

"Some viewers expressed their shock at seeing their sweet little Spidey getting his back blown out, while others praised Holland's acting range and willingness to play such a different role," writes Men's Health.

"Some have expressed their displeasure with seeing Holland simulate gay sex on-screen in the Apple TV+ series, writing 'not my Spider-Man' in social media posts to vent these frustrations," adds the DailyDot.com.

But others were quick to defend Holland, calling out the homophobic trolls.

And others were quick to point out that fellow Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have played gay characters before.

One fan commented: "So glad to see tom holland continuing the peter parker tradition of having hot gay sex."

"Most prevalent, however, have been the many jokes and memes which speculate that Holland was 'taking back shots' in the episode as a form of revenge against his girlfriend, fellow actor Zendaya, who appears to have a threesome in the trailer for the upcoming Luca Guadagnino movie 'Challengers,'" adds Men's Health. "Zendaya has, of course, long since shed her Disney Channel image thanks to her role in 'Euphoria' – it looks like Holland is now playing catchup."
