A gay man is finally directing the next installment of the long-running, hormone-fueled "Scream franchise.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, out director Christopher Landon, whose credits include the "Happy Death Day" series and "Freaky," will sit in the director's chair for the seventh installment.
Landon is the latest director after Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett helmed the 2022 installment that rebooted and refurbished the movie franchise as simply Scream. Then they followed up with Scream VI, released in March.
Sources told THR that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett stepped back from directing the next film to focus on an original horror movie for Universal, which currently impacted by the SAG-AFTRA strike. Instead, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, as well as third group member Chad Villella, will act as executive producers on the seventh 'Scream' film.
The last two "Scream" movies, distributed by Paramount, raked in $137.7 million and $168.9 million worldwide, respectively. A new cast, featuring Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera and Mason Gooding were introduced as leads along with a few longtime players such as Courtney Cox and David Arquette. Neve Campbell, who has long been considered the center star of the films, reportedly dropped out of the last film due to negotiations over compensation.
Additionally unclear is who will be writing Scream 7, THR reports.
"James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick wrote the scripts for the two recent movies. However, Landon is also an established screenwriter, having written or co-written all his directorial efforts," according to THR.
Wes Craven directed the first four "Scream" movies, with Kevin Williamson penning the original film released in 1996.
