'Fellow Travelers' Jonathan Bailey Gets Intimate about Sex Scenes with Matt Bomer

Jonathan Bailey discussed his sex scenes with fellow gay actor and "Fellow Travelers" co-star Matt Bomer in a recent interview, Just Jared reported.

In the interview, which Out conducted with Bailey before the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes commenced, the British actor deemed the show's sex scenes to be "so important," noting, "You can't tell the queer love story and not show how the sex is so intrinsic."

The upcoming Showtime miniseries, based on the 2017 novel by Thomas Mallon, sees Bailey and Bomer "play two very different men that meet during the McCarthy-era in Washington, DC and despite it being one of the most dangerous times for LGBTQ+ people in politics, the two fall in love," Just Jared said.

From there, the novel – and the miniseries, slated to premiere on Oct. 27 – follows the pair as they navigate life and love through four turbulent decades of American history.

"But the show isn't all drama and historical homophobia," noted Out magazine. "It's also a groundbreaking depiction of gay sex in a long-term relationship."

Calling sexuality "nuanced and personal," the "Bridgerton" actor, 35, ruminated that the way sex between the characters is depicted "definitely was the first time that I've seen a light being shown on the roles within a gay relationship and power and status with being submissive and dominant."

Bailey went on to add that he finds the "give and take between the two" to be an "interesting" aspect of their long-lasting (though secretive) relationship.

"So actually it's not one person going, 'I'm now going to do this.' It's like they move as a unit," Baily explained. "And I think that's beautiful. And I feel like it always is negotiation, and I'm always interested in people who identify as one role, and I would wonder what that is."

Bailey reflected on "being submissive" in an intimate partnership, as well as exploring the question of "what is kink?"

Those aspects of the fictional characters' relationship are all part of the the "love story" between the two, Bailey noted, saying that the deep bond – forged despite the real-life, virulent homophobia of that time in history – "bleeds into these scenes."

"So even in the way they have sex, it's always about generosity and communication. And that is essentially how I feel how this whole show was made on generosity and communication and truth," the actor added.

"It's all a thing," Bailey enthused about his scenes with the 45-year-old Bomer. "I just think it's a really hearty and honest examination of something which I know I've always yearned to see properly explored."

As previously reported, a trailer for the miniseries dropped recently. Though a Showtime production, the miniseries will premiere first on Paramount+ before appearing on Showtime on Oct. 29.
