Watch: 'Rustin' Teaser Drops on 60th Anniversary of Landmark Rights March

A teaser for the Colman Domingo-starring Netflix biopic of gay civil rights icon Bayard Rustin dropped Aug. 28, the 60th anniversary of the landmark "March on Washington," for which he is credited.
"Rustin marched alongside Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Ella Baker, and promoted non-violent protests," IndieWire recalled.
"Rustin served as the president of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, a civil rights organization in New York City, from 1966 to 1979," IndieWire added. "Later in life, Rustin worked for LGBTQ+ activism and brought attention to the AIDS crisis in conjunction with the NAACP."
"Rustin died in 1987, and was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2013."
"Bayard Rustin was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known," a press release for the teaser notes. "He challenged authority, never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down."
"He made history," the release adds, "and in turn, he was forgotten." The reason for that last, of course, is that Bayard Rustin was part of the LGBTQ+ community.
"Because he was a gay man who was forced to live with the constraints and prejudices of the time – including beatings and arrests – his role in the movement was not widely publicized," the release recounts, "and thus the true significance of his contribution has been muted."
But no longer. In recent years, Bayard Rustin has been emerging to greater recognition for the role he played in the civil rights struggle.
"Fearless, defiant, celebratory, demanding, unrelenting, collaborative, exceedingly curious, and smarter than smart, because of all of the above, he is for me, the ultimate American; what every American should strive to be," stated "Rustin" director George C. Wolfe, a five-time Tony Award winner.
"I am grateful and forever in awe of all that he accomplished, and deeply proud, as is everyone who worked on the making of 'Rustin,' to share his remarkable story with the world," Wolfe, who previously directed the film adaptation of the August Wilson play "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" for the streamer, added.
The release went on to say that "'Rustin' shines a long overdue spotlight on the extraordinary man who, alongside giants like the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Ella Baker, dared to imagine a different world, and inspired a movement in a march toward freedom."
Julian Breece and Oscar-winning "Milk" screenwriter Dustin Lance Black wrote the screenplay, and Brandon Marsalis composed the score. Lenny Kravitz's original song "Road to Freedom" is also featured in the production.
Emmy winner and Tony nominee Colman Domingo stars alongside Aml Ameen, who plays Martin Luther King, Jr. Chris Rock, Audra McDonald, CCH Pounder, Da'Vine Joy, and Jeffrey Wright also star.
"Rustin" will play in select theaters Nov. 3 before premiering on Netflix Nov. 17. Watch the teaser below.
