Will Gregg Araki Create a New Chapter to His 'Teen Apocalypse Trilogy?'
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Out filmmaker Gregg Araki is known for movies like "Mysterious Skin" and "Kaboom," as well as his "Teen Apocalypse Trilogy" – "Totally F**ked Up," "The Doom Generation," and "Nowhere." Now the openly gay filmmaker says he's working on a new project that's cut from "kind of the same cloth" as those films.
Araki revealed the new project in conversation with fellow filmmaker Richard Linklater, with the exchange being published by Interview Magazine, which noted that "The Doom Generation" and "Nowhere" have now been given the 4K restoration treatment by Strand Releasing.
Asked by Linklater whether films like "The Doom Generation" and "Nowhere" would get the nod from studios now, Araki said, "Well, I'm working on a new movie now that's not exactly like those movies, but kind of the same cloth, so I hope so."
"I mean, it's not like anyone's doing anything remotely like those films," Linklater said.
The conversation moved on, so no further details emerged. But just that much was enough to get film lovers talking. Film Updates took to X with word of Araki's new project, and cineastes were left jumping for joy.
As to what Araki meant by the new film being "kind of the same cloth" as those beloved cult films, the 63-year-old filmmaker might have dropped a few clues when he told Linklater, "One of the things that makes 'Nowhere' and 'Doom' special is they do have that angst and that anger and that fucking confusion of being young and all that. But because of the influence of punk rock, new wave music, there's a level of fun and joy.... It's a fun time as opposed to something like 'Euphoria,' which is the sex and the drugs and the nihilism and all that, but it's miserable."
