Legendary recording artist Cher is stepping in to take charge of her son Elijah Blue Allman's financial affairs with a filing for a conservatorship "due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues," People Magazine reported.
"According to documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by PEOPLE, the singer and actress, 77, is seeking to be the sole conservator of her son's estate, claiming that he is 'substantially unable to manage his financial resources,'" the article said.
People Mag added that, according to the filing, "although Elijah is due to receive assets from trust before the end of the year, a conservator is 'urgently needed ... to protect Elijah's property from loss or injury' because he is 'currently unable to manage his assets due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues.'"
Nor is wife Marieangela King "fit to be his conservator," People Mag said, because according to the filing, "their tumultuous relationship has been marked by a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises."
Cutting to the quick of the matter, the filing states that Cher should be assigned the conservator role because she "is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself and putting Elijah's life at risk."
"A hearing for a temporary order is currently set for Jan. 5, 2024, with the hearing on a permanent order scheduled for March 6, 2024," the article went on to say.
Conservatorship became an issue for the headlines when Britney Spears contested, and ultimately prevailed against, the conservatorship that had been placed over her in 2008, with her father acting in that capacity along with attorney Andrew Wallet. After 14 years, Spears won her case against the conservatorship in 2021; as the Associated Press reported at the time, her victory in court "capped a stunning odyssey that saw Spears publicly demand the end of the conservatorship, hire her own attorney, have her father removed from power and finally win the freedom to make her own medical, financial and personal decisions..."
Cher's attempts to intervene on behalf of her son have generated headlines before. People Mag recalled that "a report surfaced that she allegedly hired four men to forcibly remove her son from a New York City hotel room in an apparent intervention in November 2022."
Cher denied that report, but told the magazine, "I'm a mother. This is my job – one way or another, to try to help my children."
"You do anything for your children," the icon added. "Whenever you can help them, you just do it because that's what being a mother is."
Allman, 47, is a musician in his own right. He is the son of Cher and Allman Brothers Band member Gregg Allman.
