Review: 'Open to It' Delves into the Comic Complications of Throupledom
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.
OUTtv's six-episode series "Open to It" finds committed couple Cam (Tim Wardell) and Greg (creator Frank Arthur Smith) looking to liven things up by adding a third to their relationship. They've already auditioned the hot younger Princeton (Jason Caceres, "Boy Culture: The Series") with a make-out session; now it's time to go all the way.
If, that is, nosy lesbian neighbors Elsa (Kimberly Pace-Nieva) and Reggie (Elizabeth M. Boone) will stop intruding with questions, advice, and snacks...
Each of the six episodes has its own classical sitcom structure, but they all stack together to form a complex arc of opening up, shutting down, and trying to escape from an unexpectedly sticky situation. Princeton is demanding, self-centered, and – as Cam and Greg note – manipulative. That doesn't mean they're not getting off on it, though, especially the uptight Greg, who – despite Cam having been the one looking to open things up – turns out to be the one who's getting all the action.
That's when a hot bartender named Kenny (Todd Lien) happens into the action, his eyes (and hands) all over Cam. Greg? Not so much. "You're so beautiful," Kenny purrs to Greg as the three guys get busy – "especially when you're watching us."
The series rings with such one-liners. "You've become the slut you envied," Cam tells Greg, not entirely happy for him; "I can't remember the last time I had a first time," the unabashedly sex-positive Princeton muses. But there's some character development too, as the writing takes the characters beyond their tropes to include some dimensionality. The true surprise, however, is how the show's sexual complications keep piling on, like an origami creation taking shape.
As he was in "Boy Culture: The Series," Caceres is confident and at ease, which is saying something given the sheer number of sex scenes every episode manages to pack in. And what a variety! Greg, taking Cam's advice to loosen up, finds himself trying things in bed he never anticipated, while the more experienced Cam, looking to expand his own horizons, ventures into the world of drag, opening the series up to a veritable cavalcade of drag-a-licious guest stars.
Like any sitcom couple, Greg and Cam find their way back to each other time and again. Boone and Pace-Nieva bounce off each other with a zany energy, and become more central to the storyline than you might expect, but the show's leading men share a sweet chemistry that can withstand a demon twink or two.
"Open to It" is streaming now on OUTtv, with two new episodes dropping weekly.
