Long before there were big budget sequels, crossover TV episodes or the capitalist behemoth known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there were the Universal Classic Monsters. Dating all the way back to the early 1930s, Universal Studios unleased on Hollywood a stream of monster movies that were arguably revolutionary for the period, featuring ahead-of-its-time makeup and effects work, as well as legendary performances from on-screen icons like Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains and Elsa Lanchester.
The first step was introducing the monsters to audiences, which was established through early films like "Dracula" (1931), "Frankenstein" (1931), "The Mummy" (1932), "The Invisible Man" (1933) and "The Bride of Frankenstein" (1935). Other monsters, such as The Wolf Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon, were introduced in the 1940s and 1950s, respectively. These movies also spawned a myriad of sequels and spinoffs, including the Abbott and Costello crossovers that found the iconic duo meeting equally notable characters like Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, and the Mummy.
In a new 30-film collection from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, these landmark films have all been gathered into an incredible Blu-ray set.
