Othello

American Repertory Theater is currently making the case for why Shakespeare's "Othello" may be his most relevant play for our divided world.
This contemporized production began with a successful run at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival under the direction of Bill Rauch. Set on an American Naval Base, it is as sleek, taught, and precise as a military drill.
This production deftly highlights the racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and religious intolerance that is gripping the nation. Shakespeare once again "holds the mirror up to nature."
The cornerstones of this production are two spectacular and complex performances by Chris Butler as Othello and Danforth Comins as Iago. Both characters are full of contradictions, yet these actors effortlessly navigate their emotional landscapes. They are easily two of the most consistent and believable performances of the rolls in recent memory.
Another stand out is Amy Kim Waschke as Iago's wife Emilia. Her proud, fierce, and defiant portrayal is memorable in every way.
It is always worthwhile to revisit Shakespeare's works, but this production in particular is one that Boston audiences should not miss.
"Othello" continues through February 9 at the Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA. For more information, visit the American Repertory Theater website.
