A number of celebrities and politicians took to social media this week after news broke that "Empire" star Jussie Smollett was attacked in what police are calling a possible racial and anti-gay hate crime. Among the celebs sharing their thoughts was Ellen DeGeneres – but some Twitter users are taking issue with what she said.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, the daytime talkshow host wrote, "Four years ago, @JussieSmollett came out on my show. I'm sending him and his family so much love today. [heart emoji]"

A number of Twitter users blasted DeGeneres for her comments, saying she used the opportunity to promote her TV show while others called her response tone deaf after she interviewed Kevin Hart in the wake of his Oscars controversy.

"thanks, as always, for doing the bare minimum, ellen!," BuzzFeed LGBT editor Shannon Keating wrote.

"thoughts and prayers from the lady who tried to orchestrate a redemption tour for a man that joked about beating his son if his son were gay and didn't want to apologize," Vox reported Alex Abad-Santos tweeted. His tweet earned nearly 15,000 likes.

DeGeneres wasn't the only celeb to come under fire for her comments regarding Smollett. Kevin Hart also sparked outrage.

"This is unbelievably sad. Why are we going backwards....this is disgusting," the comedian wrote. "We as people have to do better. WTF is going on the world???? Why are we falling in love with hate???? God damn it people...Choose love...I repeat...Choose love.

"I will forever choose love and I will continue to teach my kids how to do the same. Stand strong brother," Hart concluded.

But some Twitter users took issue with Hart's latest comments, citing his Oscars hosting controversy. Of course, Hart lost the gig after a backlash ensued when people discovered homophobic tweets and jokes he made in the past. Specifically, jokes he made about his hypothetical reaction to learning his son being gay.
