Transgender athlete Rachel McKinnon became the wold champion at the UCI World Masters Track Cycling Championships in Los Angeles over the weekend and her win sparked Donald Trump Jr. to lash out against her on Twitter.

After her win, McKinnon, an assistant professor of philosophy at the College of Charleston, faced controversy with former competitors questioning if she should be able to compete in the women's division of the sport, People magazine reports. But in an op-ed for The Washington Post, she says she follows the regulations in order to compete, including submitting tests to track her testosterone levels, writing that her's are "so low its undetectable."

"Trans people have been allowed to compete in the Olympics since 2003, though a transgender person hasn't yet won a medal," she added. "Only a couple of us have won any world championships, ever. The fear that trans women will 'take over' sport is an irrational fear of trans people – the very definition of transphobia."

Eventually, Trump Jr., the president's son, decided to weigh in on the issue, taking to Twitter and retweeting an article about McKinnon from the right wing website TownHall.com.

"You can never be woke enough! Sorry to all female athletes who spent their lives mastering their games," he wrote.

McKinnon responded to Trump Jr.'s message, defending herself by writing: "Oh THIS explains the explosion of hate messages I'm getting!!"
