Review: 4K Treatment of Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket' is Stunning

The most joyous thing about the 4K Ultra HD format is when it's used to bring older films, shot on celluloid, to the home viewing experience with stellar visuals and sound. The latest from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is no exception. Re-releasing Stanley Kubrick's acclaimed 1987 Vietnam War picture "Full Metal Jacket" on 4K is a no-brainer, as the film is a classic worthy of the treatment, especially when you consider the amazing aesthetics of Kubrick's frames as well as its harsh auditory palette of gunshots, bloodshed, screams, and explosions.

Kubrick's war film is undeniably brutal, with two distinct segments both highlighting the dehumanizing nature of the battle. As a whole, it's a near-masterpiece that is perhaps not the most beloved of Kubrick's works, but it still holds up monumentally. In 4K, it's downright stunning.

The 4K remastering was done using a new 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative at Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging. Stanley Kubrick's former personal assistant, Leon Vitali, worked closely with the team at Warner Bros. during the mastering process. And it shows. With High Dynamic Range (HDR) and a generous color spectrum, the film's blacks are deeper, its colors are brighter, and all around this is the closest you can get to a theatrical experience inside your living room.

It's worth the purchase for this alone, yet some may be interested in the minimal bonus features on the disc. They've all been previously released, but if you've never bought "Full Metal Jacket" before, they'll be new to you. They include:

Commentary by Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey and Critic/Screenwriter Jay Cocks
Featurette "Full Metal Jacket: Between Good and Evil"
 Theatrical Trailer

Not much, but again, this release is still hugely worthy for its restoration. Film buffs, this is a must.
