If you’re a reader of the Bay Area Reporter and want to help sustain queer journalism, now is your chance. The B.A.R. will participate in the second annual LGBTQ+ Media Giving Day, set for Wednesday, October 8, though donations are now being accepted.
The online fundraiser is being spearheaded by News Is Out, a collaboration of leading LGBTQ outlets, including the B.A.R., that works to sustain and amplify queer voices nationwide.
The initiative, which started last year, falls during LGBTQ History Month and marks more than 100 years of local queer media, dating from the 1924 publication Friendship & Freedom, produced by Chicagoan Henry Gerber and his peers. The newsletter was shut down by police after just two issues, News Is Out noted.
According to a news release, tax-deductible donations will directly support journalism for News Is Out participants and the organization itself. In addition to the B.A.R. they include The Buckeye Flame, Dallas Voice, Lookout, Los Angeles Blade, Out SFL, Philadelphia Gay News, Tagg Magazine, Washington Blade, and Windy City Times.
Interested people can donate now through October 8 here. As of Friday, October 3, nearly $2,000 had been contributed.
