The trailer for out filmmaker Pedro Almodovar's new film "Dolor y Gloria" is here.
The film finds the prolific director re-teaming with two of his most well-known collaborators, Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz. Cruz has appeared in a number of Almodovar films but it's her turn in his 2006 film "Volver" that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Both Banderas and Cruz briefly appeared in Almodovar's 2013 comedy "I'm So Excited!"
As IndieWire points out, "Dolor y Gloria" takes inspiration from Federico Fellini's "8 1/2" and follows an aging filmmaker who looks back on the most important people in his life. According to a breakdown of the film, it those figures include "first loves, second loves, the mother, mortality, an actor with whom the director worked, the '60s, the '80s, current times, and the emptiness, a sense of incommensurate emptiness, caused by the inability to go on making films."
Banderas will play the fictional director Salvador Mallo in the present day. Other stars appearing in "Dolor y Gloria" include Asier Etxeandia, Julieta Serrano, and Leonardo Sbaraglia. The new movie is Almodovar's first since the 2016 drama "Julieta." IndieWire notes "Dolor y Gloria" will debut first in Spain on March 22 before possibly debuting at the Cannes Film Festival later this year, where Almodovar has debuted a number of his movies.
Sony is releasing "Dolor y Gloria" and has not announced when the movie will hit the U.S.
