Transgender woman wins bias suit against Library of Congress

A federal judge has found that the Library of Congress illegally discriminated against a transgender woman in the process of transitioning when it withdrew a job offer to her. The ruling in Schroer v. Billington came on the afternoon of July 19; the remedy has yet to be decided.

Rock 'n' Roll'

Darn that thing called human nature. It has screwed up everything from the Russian Revolution to Pink Floyd. But like the sporadic little blips on a radar screen, human nature promises the only real twinkle in our personal firmament. It's not a complicated concept, though Tom Stoppard gives it a dense context in his play Rock 'n' Roll before letting a moment of visceral pleasure bring down the final curtain.

Moby Dick! The Musical

Moby Dick! The Musical could serve as the basis for the first reality-show competition for theater directors. A "Project Runway" kind of thing, where each director is handed a sack of theatrical scraps, a small budget, and the assignment to create something funny, fresh, and innovative from the recycled material. Director John Fisher's production might eke its way to the middle of a "Project Gangplank" season, but I don't think it would still be around for the finals.
