The Flash - The Complete First Season

JC Alvarez READ TIME: 3 MIN.

The superhero explosion isn't more literally explored than in the immensely popular 75-year history of the DC Comics character that runs at high velocity and is at one with the "speed force."

When producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg decided the time was right to create a radically different spinoff from the intense urban-warfare proliferating The CW hit show "Arrow," starring the brawny Stephen Amell, it made perfect sense that "The Flash" would come on the scene.

In "The Flash" - The Complete First Season, now available on Blu-ray and Digital HD, former "Glee" star Grant Gustin embodies the role of the comic book Scarlet Speedster, who by day is eager Central City CSI investigator Barry Allen. When an experiment goes terribly wrong, lightning strikes (literally),turning Allen into the "Flash" and unleashes a dangerously unpredictable amount of energy that turns normal humans into "metahumans" - individuals gifted or cursed with powers. Some use them for good, while others use them for evil gain. That's where the Flash comes into play.

Barry uses his super-speed to protect the innocent, all the while investigating one of the greatest mysteries of his own life -the murder of his mother at the hands of a "man in yellow." It's a crime that's plagued Barry's existence since childhood and has also cost the freedom of his father, who is convicted of the murder. Barry's father, Henry Allen, is played by actor John Wesley Shipp, who first originated the role of "The Flash" in the now-classic 1990 adventure series that aired on CBS.

During the course of "The Flash" in its first season, the show introduced a growing pantheon of super-powered DC comic book favorites, including Firestorm, the Nuclear Man (played by Robbie Amell and veteran actor Victor Garber), and most of the hero's more popular rogues gallery like Captain Cold, Heatwave, Gorilla Grodd (a special effects achievement that garnered the show an Emmy nomination) and the Reverse-Flash, the latter of which lead to the premiere season's greatest story arc, the cliff-hanger of which is being anxiously anticipated by fans ready for the second season.

With a cast that includes Jesse L. Martin and Tom Cavanagh, and also starring new rising stars Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker and Carlos Valdes, "The Flash" has truly turned the superhero genre on its ear becoming one of the most popular shows in primetime! Sure its "super" but at the core "The Flash" has a lot of heart and character drama -"The Flash" will make you believe in the impossible! The complete first season is available on this 4-disc set, and features a collection of super-powered bonus features.

This Blu-ray set includes over three hours of bonus content, including an exclusive look at "The Fastest Man Alive!" an in-depth documentary exploring the history of the DC Comics character that has proven as popular as the imprint's resident Dark Knight and Man of Steel. Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the visual effects that bring "The Flash" up to speed, and actor Grant Gustin's screen test that landed him the lead role. For the avid fanboy there is a special presentation featuring the cast from their first-times appearance at Comic-Con in 2014.
