Yalitza Aparicio says her role as Cleo, a domestic worker central to the awards season darling "Roma ," is more personal. It was her mother's profession, and Aparicio says she set out to make it a tribute to her mother and others like her.

The Netflix film from Alfonso Cuaron is an Oscar favorite, earning widespread praise for the director and Aparicio, who had ambitions to be a pre-school teacher before her life-changing role.

Aparicio had never seen a Cuaron film or acted before she attended a casting call for "Roma" with her sister, who was auditioning. Her performance has earned inclusion on top acting lists.

On Sunday, she'll compete at the Critics' Choice Awards for best actress alongside Emily Blunt, Glenn Close, Toni Collette, Olivia Colman, Lady Gaga and Melissa McCarthy.
