Remember When Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Played Gay?
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson might be one of the biggest movie stars of his generation, having made $3.5 billion at the box office in North America. And while he might be best known for his action films like the "Jumanji" reboot and his roles in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, one of his earliest movies featured the actor playing gay.
One of the first movies Johnson appeared in was the 2005 crime-comedy film "Be Cool." IMDb's synopsis says: "Disenchanted with the movie industry, Chili Palmer tries the music industry, meeting and romancing a widow of a music executive on the way." Directed by F. Gary Gray, it also stars John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, Cedric the Entertainer, André 3000, Christina Milian, Debi Mazar, Harvey Keitel, Danny DeVito, Seth Green, James Woods and more (plus several cameos).
In "Be Cool," Johnson plays Elliot Wilhelm, a bodyguard for Keitel and Vaughn's characters, who is a gay Samoan and is frequently the butt of their homophobic jokes.
But Johnson took a moment on Monday to reflect on his role after former Out Magazine editor Jeffrey R. Epstein tweeted the actor's issue cover.
"For the film 'Be Cool.' One of the nicest, smartest humans I have ever interviewed. Met at a downtown NYC restaurant. Just him. No entourage. A class act," Epstein tweeted.
Johnson quote tweeted his message, thanking Epstein for the shoutout.
"I always say, 'it's nice to be important, but more important to be nice,'" he added. "I was told back then (by a few influential folks) that playing a gay man would 'ruin my career.' I said 'hold my tequila and f*ck off.' Nicely of course."
