Netflix has released first-look images of openly gay actor Andrew Scott in its upcoming "Ripley" miniseries, a new adaptation of the work of lesbian novelist Patricia Highsmith.

"Scott leads 'Ripley' as the title character, with Dakota Johnson and Johnny Flynn co-starring," IndieWire reported. "Steven Zaillian writes, directs, and executive produces the TV series adaptation, with lead star Scott producing."

Netflix released three striking photos showing Scott in the role. All three are compositions in moody black and white, underlying both the noirish nature of the narrative and the source material's midcentury origins (it is not known whether the series itself will also be presented in black and white).

Scott, at 47, is older than the character's traditional depiction, but the out actor's chiseled features serve the title well in the first-look pictures and his Irish good looks are more striking than ever in the chiaroscuro of the single close-up image in the newly released photographs.

There is little doubt as to Scott's range; he has portrayed roles as diverse as the Sherlock Holmes' diabolical nemesis Jim Moriarty in the popular BBC program "Sherlock" to the "hot priest" who warmed up Phoebe Waller-Bridge's hit BBC comedy "Fleabag," to the gay main character in the eagerly anticipated new feature from Andrew Haigh, the mysterious romance "All of Us Strangers."

The Netflix synopsis for "Ripley" indicates what's in store for viewers as Scott takes on the mantle of the iconic character, which has been portrayed by actors as diverse as Matt Damon (in 1999's "The Talented Mr. Ripley") and Alain Delon (in the 1960 French adaptation "Purple Noon").
