Back in the Saddle! (Or My Passionate Return to LGBTQ+ Storytelling at EDGE Media)
Dr. William Kapfer READ TIME: 9 MIN.
EDGE has always been my writing home, where my voice resonates with a vibrant community.
This summer, my passion for writing reignited as I returned as a guest columnist for EDGE Media Network, a global hub, with a vibrant and affirming ethos, for LGBTQ+ news and entertainment with over 8 million dedicated readers. EDGE has always been my writing home, where my voice resonates with a vibrant community.
My journey with EDGE began in 2009, reawakening my storytelling drive. Those early years saw me explore diverse topics, from healthcare to travel, arts to celebrity insights. Revisiting those early pieces now ignites a warm, nostalgic glow.
Yet, it's not just articles on travel and culture that gave meaning to my experience. It's the profound conversations with remarkable individuals. Dialogues with figures like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, activist and reality show star Reichen Lehmkuhl, and country music artist Chely Wright left infinite impact. I interviewed Chely twice – first in 2010, and again in 2022, my second piece upon returning. These were more than interviews; they were privileged glimpses into lives of honesty, bravery, and vibrant authenticity.
Each story shared, each truth told, a gift that underscores the power of storytelling. These narratives continue to inspire my passion for uncovering and sharing the human experience.
Returning to EDGE during June's Pride month, my "Out with Dr. Bill" columns have seen a revitalization.
Each piece explores the heartbeat of our vibrant community, a privilege that reminds me of the impact and responsibility that is incumbent upon storytellers.
As I journey back to New York for our New Year's Eve celebration, I'm compelled to share significant end-of-year moments. These reflections, composed above the clouds while flying from Tucson, bring a sense of closure and anticipation as the curtains of 2023 close.
Foreign Press Awards with CNN's Fareed Zakaria
On December 11th, I had the honor of attending the Foreign Press Awards at New York's University Club. This prestigious venue, typically frequented by those from elite schools, was an extraordinary treat for a state-school scholarship recipient like me.
Thanos Dimadis, the impeccably dressed President of the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents, warmly greeted me at the door with his signature wide smile.
A delightful surprise of the evening was running into Elizabeth Vazquez, President of WEConnect International. Having worked closely with Elizabeth on initiatives supporting women-owned businesses globally, it was a pleasure to connect as invited guests of AFPC members. Our shared commitment to this cause has been a meaningful part of my journey.
The ceremony highlighted the vital role of the press and the challenges journalists face amid misinformation and shifting democratic values.
The pinnacle though was a fireside chat where Thanos Dimadis interviewed Fareed Zakaria, the esteemed CNN host and columnist. I've been a devout viewer of "Fareed Zakaria GPS" every Sunday morning, so hearing his insights firsthand was particularly impactful.
Fareed discussed AI's role in journalism with skepticism, emphasizing its limitations in providing nuanced, creative responses and information retrieval. This insightful dialogue, especially from a journalist I deeply admire, provided profound perspective on the evolving media and technology landscape.
