Thom Bar

The 60 Thompson Hotel has certainly got a lot going on besides the delicious Kittichai restaurant on the ground floor, where I had the pleasure of dining on Lulzim Rexhepi's fusion cuisine last year-further up is the members-only roof-deck scene-but in between is the gorgeous Thom Bar, where Grupo Irk unleashes his unique brand of Cuban rhythms every Sunday night, playing three live sets at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm. There is no cover and 2-for-$12 Cuban Mojitos and Rum Sangria flow on these sultry nights when Irk plays live, as well as a menu of tempting bites that includes Chicken & Shrimp Wontons ($12) and Vietnamese Spring Rolls ($12) with pork, vermicelli and mushrooms; Vegetarian Spring Rolls ($10) with mango sriracha dipping sauce; Thai Beef Salad ($13) with Chinese long beans; Roasted Duck Wraps ($10) with cucumber and black bean sauce; Tuna Tartare ($14) arranged with limestone tartlets, peanuts and ginger; and Banana Spring Rolls ($8) with burnt honey ice cream, which indeed seems like an excellent roll to accompany all the rocking. Apart from the special mojitos and sangria, Blood Orange Cosmopolitans ($15) with Stoli Ohranj, lime, and tangy blood orange juice are always on hand, or perhaps choose more simply by ordering a Thom ($12) with Skyy Citrus vodka, lime and fresh mint.

Irk's original mix of cha-cha, mambo and New York street music has been requested at parties for Sting, Demi and Ashton, Madonna, Oscar de la Renta, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Mickey Rourke. So why not get in the conga line?
